Article by Idris Garcia
Two courses at Burchfield Park in Lansing, Mich., played host the the United States Women’s Disc Golf Championships last weekend, where Vanessa Van Dyken and Catrina Allen posted top-5 finishes.
Van Dyken leapt onto the lead card with a 1016-rated second round, which was four throws better than anyone in the field, and tied eventual champion Paige Piece for the hot round on the last day to bring her four round total to a 15-under par 248.
During the last round, she followed a bogey on 15 with a turkey through 18 and pushed Pierce all the way to the finish, matching her shot-for-shot through the last three holes of the 21-hole layout of Renegades Trail. The 987-rated effort put her in a second place tie, just two strokes from first.
Catrina Allen also turned in a strong performance to finish in a tie for fifth. Allen bookended the tournament with her best rounds to start and finish the event on the way to a 9-under par 254 total. She had a nice birdie run of her own, getting four in a row from holes 17-20 to finish the round on a high note and secure her spot in the top five.
Matt Orum kept his reign of Southern Nationals events going with a win at the Wall Doxey Rumble in the Jungle in Mississippi. The win in Holly Springs adds to the several singles and doubles wins in Southern Nationals events on top of his impressive PDGA sanctioned resume this season.
Josh Flynn claimed his home state crown at the Idaho State Championship in Rupert. Flynn bested 29 other competitors by averaging a whopping 45 points over his rating and shooting two rounds rated 1030-plus. He finished with a 42-under par 207 over four rounds, which was seven throws ahead of second.
Sam Shiley picked up a win Saturday in Leesburg, Va., at The Brent Anderson Memorial. He tossed a 5-under par 58 in the one round event to take the victory.
