WEEKEND ROUNDUP: ALLEN, PAJU, JONES DAZZLE AT PORTLAND OPEN, COLGLAZIER CROWNED SOUTHERN NATIONALS CHAMP
Article by Idris Garcia
Catrina Allen’s win streak may have ended at Discraft’s Portland Open in Oregon, but it didn’t come easily. Allen finished a mere two strokes out of first at the latest Disc Golf Pro Tour event while nearly topping the 1000 rated mark twice.
She managed the feat once in a 1002-rated first round for her eighth 1000 rated round of the season. Allen rebounded from a tough second round to again grab a share of the hot score in the third round and totaled an 8-under par 190. As has been the case throughout the tour, she led the way off the tee, finishing first in fairway hits, parked shots and circle 1 in regulation while finishing second in circle 2 in regulation.
Seppo Paju finished in a tie for third place finish in Open Men, just one stroke short of joining a playoff for the win. His bogey-free 12-under 54 in the final round helped him jump three spots on the final day. Paju finished at a 26-under 172 and on the podium to match his best finish in a DGPT event so far this year. The Finnish product not only displayed his trademark accuracy by leading in parked shots but also kept out of trouble and led in scramble percentage.
Kevin Jones also had a top-10 showing for the ninth time in 13 events so far. Jones’ highlight of the weekend came in a blistering second round in which he set the course record. He lit up Blue Lake with a 1093-rated 15-under 51 which included an 11-hole birdie streak. He finished with a 21-under 177 total in a tie for eighth. All three competitors are scheduled to play the Beaver State Fling National Tour event in Estacada, Ore., next weekend.
Colglazier Cruises to Southern Nationals Pro Championship Win
Cameron Colglazier kept it closer to home in Lafayette, La., to win the 2019 Southern Nationals Pro Championship. It marks his fourth win of the year, and the six stroke victory earned him a spot in this year’s United States Disc Golf Championship.
Colglazier was down by two to start the second round, but a 1059-rated hot round put him atop the leaderboard for good as he managed to grab a share of the hot score in the third round, too. Colglazier totaled a 28-under 165 over three rounds and a final nine.
Mike Brown won the Pro Masters 40+ Division to also earn a prestigious USDGC spot. He followed Colglazier’s lead in having a strong second round to help propel him to an 18-under 175 total. It’s his third win in a row and fifth on the year.
Cale Leiviska ran his win streak to four with back-to-back wins at the Willmar Open and Bemidji Open, both in Minnesota. Along with winning the Willmar Open by five, he also helped run the event. The next day, Leiviska was back on the course for more, this time winning by eight. His Bemidji Open win came with a 1066-rated opening round. Ben Kroll came in second at the event and Patrick Christie tied for third. Troy Pendzimas won Amateur Masters 40+.
Kroll also played two events over the weekend and won the Hyzer Holiday at Rivercrest.
Daniel Polk and Gannon Buhr claimed wins at the Des Moines Challenge 2019. Polk took the Pro Masters 40+ title, and Buhr grabbed the Advanced Division crown. Both won in crowded fields, with Buhr besting 61 other competitors. Billy Ray Osborn claimed forth in Amateur Masters 40+.
Nick Rowton won The Brownfield Open in Texas, clearing the field by 10 strokes. Kolby Sanchez picked up a fourth place finish in Intermediate.
Cameron Benak’s first win of the year came at the Tip of the Mitt Open. He won the Harbor Springs, Mich., event by four.
Bobby Jones won Pro Masters 50+ at the 14th Great Chili Cookout in Ontario, N.Y. There, Street Team member Justin Gilbert won Open and Battalion Team member Eric Basile won Intermediate.
Jamie Spencer won Advanced Women at The Shootout at Wilderness Ranch in dominant fashion. She led by a whopping 24 strokes after the two round event in Lakeside, Ariz.
