Weekend Roundup: Allen Sets Course Record, Wins San Francisco Open Handily

Article by Idris Garcia

Catrina Allen has been locked in several tight races which have been decided on the final hole this season. At The San Francisco Open, however, Allen was able to relax on the 18th tee, the tournament well in hand.

She earned that sigh of relief with an eye-popping 18-under par 180, which led the field by nine. Allen torched the Gleneagles Disc Golf Course, averaging 997-rated golf over the three round event. Her victory march at the latest Disc Golf Pro Tour included a 10-under 56 in round two that set the Open Women’s course record and garnered a 1021 rating.

Allen entered the final round with a five stroke lead that got cut to two on hole 10. She turned on the jets from there to birdie five of the final eight holes, including the last three. She sealed the tournament by parking the island hole 16th.

Allen led the field in birdie percentage, fairway hits, parked percentage, circle 1 in regulation and circle 2 in regulation. She also managed the wind well on the long layout to keep the disc between the lines and finish with a share of the lead in OB rate.

Kevin Jones turned in a consisten performance, notching two 8-under pars to go with a 6-under in round two to finish in a tie for sixth. He posted two rounds with ratings over 1050 and finished at a 22-under 170.

Jones showed off his range on the tee and on the green in the final round with back-to-back eagles. On the par-4 ninth hole, he tossed in his two from 84 feet and on the par-5 10th, he nailed a 38-foot but for three.

Seppo Paju finished 10th with a 20-under 172. Paju led the Open field in circle 1 in regulation and also cracked the 1050 mark twice. Matt Orum 1073-rated 11-under 53 in the final round moved him up eight spots into an 11th place tie. He shot a 19-under 173 total.

Leiviska Wins in Minnesota

Cale Leiviska stayed in his home state of Minnesota to win the Saint Paul Classic. It’s his fourth win of the year and third in The North Star State. He tossed a 24-under 84 to win with Daniel Polk hot on his heels. Polk made his best comeback attempt with a 1052-rated second round but finished two strokes short.

Patrick Christie finished in a tie for fourth and Street Teamer Miles Wood finished ninth. Jakey Lingle finished 10th in Intermediate.

At Mayhem on the Mountain in Superior, Wisc., Mitch Privette took the top spot with Ben Kroll coming in second.
