Weekend Roundup: Jones Gets Signature Win at Idlewild as Allen Takes FPO Title to a Playoff

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: JONES GETS SIGNATURE WIN AS ALLEN TAKES FPO TITLE TO A PLAYOFF

Kevin Jones was on the verge of his first Disc Golf Pro Tour win during the final round of last year’s Idlewild Open in Burlington, Ky., but the course’s demanding back nine sunk Jones into a tie for fifth. Jones again made the final round turn atop the leaderboard this year and stayed there.

Jones finished with a 27-under par 177 over three rounds to collect the first elite series win of his career. He led throughout the event, deftly navigating Idlewild’s tight fairways and punishing out-of-bounds, starting with a 1071-rated opening round.

With 10 par-4’s and two par-5’s peppering the course, Jones showed off his accuracy in accessing the green to give himself scoring chances. He led in parked shots with an impressive 31 percent while also leading in circle 1 in regulation.

Things managed to tighten up in the final stretch, but Jones stayed composed to close out the four stroke win.

Matt Orum, Brandon Brown and Lance Brown all had top-20 finishes.

Catrina Allen also managed the treacherous terrain well in a second place finish, leading in fairway hits, circle 1 in regulation and circle 2 in regulation. Allen, like she has had to do several times this season, kept pace in a tight battle at the top.

Allen came into the final round in a first place tie and fought back from several deficits to push the tournament into extra holes. Faced with a circle’s edge putt after going OB on the par-5 16th hole, Allen connected to pull even once again late in the round. Despite her best efforts, an unfortunate roll on the playoff hole helped keep her out of first. She finished with a 13-over par 213 total.

Osborn bided his time during the long competition, which lasted seven rounds and a final nine. He started the event two strokes back of first after the first round and made a steady climb from there, averaging nearly 33 points above his rating throughout the competition.

Osborn totaled a 27-under 445 for the week, which was good for a 17 stroke win.

Street Team member Justin Rosak had a successful week himself, climbing into third in the Advanced Division. Rosak started the week in the B Pool but moved up into the A Pool and remained there after making the cut. He was the only player who started in the B Pool to make the top-10. He shot a 40-under 453 total.

Two-time Junior World Champion Gannon Buhr played in his first career Open event at the 2019 Noelridge Singles in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and won. Buhr was scorching hot, shooting rounds rated 1037 and 1029 en route to a four stroke win. He totaled a 26-under 96.

Mitch Privette and Daniel Polk claimed wins at the Twin Town Throwdown in Bloomington, Minn. Privette took it down in Open after rallying to force a playoff while Polk won in Pro Masters 40+. Ben Kroll finished fourth in Open.

Mike Brown won the Pinebelt Punkout in Lumberton, Miss., for his eighth win overall and sixth in a row in Pro Masters 40+. Brown used a course record and 1051-rated second round to win by eleven.
