Weekend Roundup: Allen Takes Third at European Open, Jones T-9th in MPO; Leiviska, Colglazier Win Stateside

Catrina Allen continues to post top finishes, this time taking third at the European Open in Nokia, Finland, to kick off the PDGA Majors. Allen’s podium finish is her 12th in a row and 15th in 16 singles events.

The Beast proved to be a tough course to tame over the weekend, but Allen took a crack at it, finishing with her best scores in the first and fourth rounds. She finished in the top-3 in fairway hits, birdie percentage, circle 1 in regulation and circle 2 in regulation. Allen finished with a 17-over par 273 total.

Kevin Jones’ final hole of the first round put him in a tough spot, but he battled back over the next three rounds to finish in a ninth place tie. He climbed the leaderboard in every round and posted his best score in the final round to secure the top-10 finish. Jones tossed a 22-under par 234 total.

Väinö Mäkelä, a member of Prodigy Europe’s Platinum Team and a Finnish native, defended his home turf well with a top-15 showing, highlighted by a blistering 1063-rated opening round. His 21-under par 235 total landed him in 14th in the 128 player field.

All three Prodigy team members competed in the Presidents Cup before the European Open. Jones and Allen helped guide Team USA to a 31-21 win over Mäkelä and Team Europe. Jones led Team USA in points winning both in stroke play and match play.

Leiviska, Colglazier Each Collect Third Win in Last Four Events

Cale Leiviska and Cameron Colglazier stayed in their home states and got their third wins in the last four events they have played.

Leiviska won the Forest Fury Open in South St. Paul, Minn., shooting a 29-under 139 in over two rounds. Leiviska took a one stroke lead with the hot score in round one and added another stroke in a tight battle to win by two.

Daniel Polk also won at the event, besting the competition in the Pro Masters 40+ Division by four. Mitch Privette and Ben Kroll finished in a tie for sixth and tenth, respectively, in Open.

His 1049-rated final round was 9 strokes better than his closest fellow competitor.

G.T. Hancock got a proper warmup for Harry Myers 2.0 in Rock Wall, Texas, tying for first at the flex start on Friday before winning the event on Saturday. Hancock posted the low score in each of the two rounds to finish with a 7-under 129. With the two wins, he cracked the double digit mark and now has 11 on the year.
