Weekend Roundup: Allen Finishes Fourth at Maple Hill, Mäkelä in Top-10 Again

WEEKEND ROUNDUP: ALLEN FINISHES FOURTH AT MAPLE HILL, MÄKELÄ IN TOP-10 AGAIN

Article by Idris Garcia

Väinö Mäkelä’s second stint in the States this year has been a successful venture for the Finnish star. On the heels of a top-20 finish at Worlds and a 9th place finish at last week’s National Tour in Delaware, Mäkelä again played himself into the top-10 at the MVP Open at Maple Hill, a Disc Golf Pro Tour event.

Finland is renown for its tough wooded courses, so Mäkelä no doubt felt comfortable on the punishing Leichester, Mass., track. He averaged nearly 20 points above his rating on the way to a 14-under par 166 total over three rounds and finished in 8th place. Fellow Finn Seppo Paju and Alabama pro Matt Orum finished in a tie for 23rd to secure top-25 finishes.

Catrina Allen continued her strong season in Open Women, taking a fourth place finish with a 1-under 182. Allen posted another 1000-rated round in the opener to get off to a good start and she has yet to finish outside of fourth on the season.

Chris Dickerson was dominant at the Secret City Classic 2, an event he won convincingly last year, too. Dickerson built a six stroke lead in the first round and then added another seven in the second. He shot a 30-under 150. In finishing 13 strokes clear of second, he collected his 19th win of the year.

Nick Rowton got his second win in as many weeks at the Lamesa Labor Day Bash in Texas. Rowton surged back over the final two rounds after being in a six-stroke hole after round one. He capped off the event with a 1053-rated third round to total a 25-under 143 and win by five.

Dutch Napier made a return to the course in Henderson, Ky., and won Flippin and Flyin’ 9. Napier opened up the tournament with a 1041-rated first round and again had the low score in round two to seal the deal with an 18-under 90 total. The eight stroke win was his first action since early June and his third win of the year.

G.T. Hancock claimed each of the three podium spots over the weekend in Texas. He won the Flex Start at Audubon Park in Garland, then placed second in the Flex Start Friday @ LL Woods in Lewisville. He finished it off with a third place showing at The Hell Raiser in Lorena. There, he tossed a 4-under 108 over two rounds and finished a stroke shy of a first place playoff.
