Weekend Roundup: Allen Takes 3rd at World Championships, Dickerson and Jones Earn Top-10 Finishes in MPO

Article by Idris Garcia

The world’s top disc golf talent was on full display last week at the 2019 PDGA Professional Disc Golf World Championships, as the best players from around the globe flocked to Peoria, Ill., to compete for a world title.

Catrina Allen continued her 2019 podium streak on the biggest stage, finishing third. She has finished lower than third just once this year—a fourth place finish all the way back in early March—in her 21 events.

On the MPO side, five Prodigy players worked their way into the top-20, with Chris Dickerson (5th) and Kevin Jones (7th) playing their way into the top-10. Matt Orum and Cameron Colglazier tied for 18th, and Finland’s Väinö Mäkelä came in a tie for 20th.

Allen was surgical off the tee as she has been all year in hitting 82 percent of the fairways. That led the Open Women’s field, and she also led in parked shots, circle 1 in regulation and circle 2 in regulation. She did her best work in a 1025-rated second round and finished with a 16-under 293 total in five rounds.

Dickerson leaned on his ability to avoid trouble, leading the Open division in scramble percentage. He climbed up the leaderboard throughout the event before finding the top-5 headed into the final round where he posted a strong score to hold his position.

Dickerson and Jones both posted their best scores in round three with matching 10-under par 53’s which garnered a 1072 rating. Dickerson posted a 35-under 282 total and Jones finished with a 29-under 288.

Colglazier and Orum have been playing together for years, and even played a practice round together before the event. Calling the same area of Alabama home, the pair is close off the course and they were close on the scorecard, too. Each tossed a 19-under 298 total. Väinö Mäkelä has had a solid season in Finland and impressed at the World Championships with a steady finish in a tie for 20th place, just one stroke behind Colglazier and Orum.

Team Prodigy Finishes Strong at Hopkinsville Open, Buzzard Roost Ruckus

Ben Page got his second win in a row at the 2nd Annual Hopkinsville Open in Kentucky. Page grabbed the lead in round one and didn’t give it up, totaling a 20-under 103 over two rounds. He finished four strokes ahead of teammate Blake Thomas in second. Tanner Girouard tied for third and G.T. Hancock finished in fifth.

Austin Lytle, Alden Harris, and Matt Versola filled up the podium at the Buzzard Roost Ruckus IV in Douglasville, Ga. Lytle came out on top with a 26-under par 186 over three rounds and a final nine. It took a 1054-rated third round for Lytle to separate himself by two from Harris. They were tied going into round three and shot the same score in the finals. Versola rounded out the top three with a 22-under 190.

Cooper Legee narrowly won the Devil’s Grove Summer Classic in Lewiston, Maine. Legee finished with a 26-under 88 over two rounds to tie for the lead. He then managed to take the playoff for his first win of the year.

Jacob Henson added another win in Southaven, Miss., at the Southern Birdie Feast. He racked up a 16-under 92 to win by two.

Clayton Morgan won the 35th Flatts Classic in Saint Thomas, Ontario, Canada. Morgan was locked in a heated battle at the top over the first two rounds before posting a hot score in round three to take the win. He totaled a 25-under 146.

Daniel Polk keeps winning in Pro Masters 40+, taking his fifth win in a row and ninth overall in the division. This time, the victory lap came at the Highbridge Hills Open in Wisconsin. Polk won by four with a 20-under 165 in three rounds. Mitch Privette took third in Open.

Troy Pendzimas won Amateur Masters 40+ in Side Lake, Minn., at the Augustus Open. He not only took a two stroke win but also ran the event.
